As a newcomer to the world of radio controlled hobbies, many habitancy are confused with the abbreviations that are used to divulge products. Here's a guide that will help you understand the terms that are often used. Radio Control, Radio Controlled, often abbreviated R/C or Rc:
Is naturally the use of radio signals to operate a device. Radio transmitters send a signal on a definite frequency to an Rc airplane, Rc helicopter, Rc boat Rc truck or Rc car. The receiving gismo accepts the same frequency signal from the transmitter to operate the device. Rc is used every day by industry, military, medical and law enforcement.

Ready to fly, ready-to-fly or Rtf:
Refers to a installation pre-assembled Rc plane, Rc airplane or Rc helicopter that is essentially ready to fly right from the box. Regularly the assembly is very minimal, (great for guys like me with two left thumbs) and once the battery is expensed you are ready to fly.
Ready to run, ready-to-run, Rtr:
Is used to define a radio controlled product that does not fly but runs on land or water. Rc cars, buggies, boats, trucks, tanks and hovercraft (I still haven't decided whether a hovercraft flies or runs) fall into this category. These items are installation pre-assembled with minute or no assembly required. An Rtr like an Rtf is easy to get started, just fee and go.
2-Channel, 3-Channel, and 4-Channel:
The radio or transmitter sends signals to the receiver settled in the Rc item. Each channel controls one function. For example, in a 2-channel plane, one channel would operate the motor speed, and someone else channel would operate the rudder. A 3-channel Rc airplan e would operate the motor, rudder and elevator surfaces. A 4-channel plane would have the same controls as a 3-channel plane with an added channel to operate the aileron surfaces. An Rc car, Rc buggy, Rc truck or Rc tank is controlled in a similar fashion. One channel controls the Rc car speed, while someone else controls forward and reverse and a third channel would operate left and right motion.
As you can see, it isn't that complicated. It just takes a minute time to get acquainted with the terminology we so easily banter about, forgetting that not everyone is well-known with the terms. So whether you are concerned in Rc cars, Rc tanks, Rc planes, Rc helicopters, Rc hovercraft or Rc boats the world of radio controlled hobbies has the collection and the products to get you on the road to fun and excitement!
