Always buy a remote controlled helicopter with a minimum of 4 channels - anyone less makes it hard to operate and wont fly in all directions. 4 channels are more piquant but once you have got the hang of it the flying touch is a thousand times great and will stand you in good stead should you ever wish to move to a more industrialized helicopter. industrialized models being 6 channels or more can be the next step up or a first buy when you have adequate support.
Buy a helicopter with good back up and reserve - you may need spares, upgrades, phone or email reserve and even person that can fix it if goes wrong. Think a business that has the backup and reserve of a serious Rc Helicopter technician.

Buy training aids to accompany your helicopter- spending some time practicing will admittedly paid dividends once you are up in the air. The training aids could include include ping pong balls (stabilisers) that can be bought from any good Rc shop.
Consider a flight simulator - Phoenix provides the most realistic touch and graphics or you can download our Free Fms flight sim. You can then practice on your computer and build your reliance up before starting for real.
Have realistic expectations - Rc helis are spectacular, fun but you should resist the temptation to attempt loop-the-loops on your first go. Try piquant your Rc along the floor first, then fly it just a foot or so above the ground, until you feel in control. Some helicopters are easier than others to hover, so get some guidance first.
